Burying milk jugs next to plants works? if so, how deep to Bury them and where to poke holes in the jug?

I've never seen anyone bury them. I've seen 5 gallon buckes used with a hole in the very bottom on the side. I would guess that they want to bury them a bit so they don't blow away when they are empty. I would still keep the hole near the bottom.
